PNG, JPG, WEBP — any background colour
What does this tool actually do?
You take a photo or scan of your signature on paper — white paper, grey paper, cream, lined, whatever — and this tool cuts out the background and gives you back just the signature on a transparent PNG. The kind you can drop onto any document, contract, or form without a white box showing up around it.
It handles paper of any colour automatically. You don't pick a background colour or mess with settings — it figures that out on its own by sampling the edges of your image. Most of the time the default tolerance setting works fine and you're done in one click.
How to use it
- Upload your signature image — a phone photo, a flatbed scan, or even a screenshot will work. PNG, JPG, and WEBP are all fine.
- Click Remove Background. The tool reads the border pixels to detect the paper colour, then removes everything that matches it. Enclosed areas inside letters (like the loop in "D" or "o") are cleaned up as well.
- Check the result. If there are faint paper patches still showing, drag the Colour tolerance slider a little to the right. If parts of the ink are disappearing, bring it back down. You usually don't need to touch it at all.
- Optionally change the ink colour — useful if you want a black signature from a blue-pen original, or need to match a brand colour. You can also add a background fill if you need the output on a solid colour instead of transparent.
- Download your PNG. That's it.
When you'd actually reach for this
- You signed on paper and need to insert it into a PDF, Word document, or Google Doc. Download the transparent PNG and paste or insert it directly — no white box, no visible edge.
- Your signature is on cream or off-white paper and a simple brightness threshold tool leaves patches behind. The colour-distance approach here handles that without needing manual cleanup.
- You want the signature in a different ink colour — say you signed in blue but your document template expects black. Pick the colour after removing the background and download.
- You're adding a signature to an invoice, proposal, or NDA and want something that looks like it was signed digitally rather than scanned and cropped badly.
- You need a signature image for an email footer, a certificate, or a stamp — somewhere it needs to sit cleanly on a coloured background without a white rectangle around it.
Tips for a clean result
- Make sure the edges of the image are just paper — no ink touching the border. The tool seeds the background removal from the image edges, so ink that touches the border can prevent parts of the background from being removed.
- Good lighting helps a lot. Shadows across the paper show up as colour variation and can make parts of the background look different from the rest, causing patches to survive. A flat, even light gives the cleanest cuts.
- If your signature is very faint or the ink is a similar shade to the paper, lower the tolerance to avoid losing fine strokes. The tool tries to preserve ink even at higher tolerances, but light ink on light paper is a hard case for any algorithm.
- Edge smoothing is on by default. It softens the boundary between ink and transparent areas so the signature doesn't look like it was cut out with scissors. Turn it off if you want crisp, hard edges.
Privacy
Your image never leaves your device. Everything runs in the browser — no server, no upload, no storage. Close the tab and it's gone. The tool doesn't phone home, log anything, or require an account.
