Communicating intent clearly
Watermarks aren't just for copyright. They're one of the most effective ways to signal the status of a document without writing a separate email. Stamping "DRAFT," "CONFIDENTIAL," or "FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY" across a page ensures that anyone who sees the document immediately understands how they should handle it.
If you're a freelancer or a creative, adding your name or website as a subtle watermark on preview documents is a professional way to maintain ownership before a final version is handed over.
Finding the right balance
A good watermark should be visible but not distracting. Here's how to get the look right:
- Opacity is key: For a professional look, keep the opacity low—somewhere between 0.15 and 0.30. This makes the text easy to read if someone looks for it, but lets the actual document content shine through without being obscured.
- Angle matters: A diagonal watermark (45°) is the standard for a reason. It's much harder to crop out or ignore than a small horizontal line at the very top or bottom of a page.
- Sizing for impact: For short words like "COPY," a larger font size (60pt+) works well. For longer phrases or sentences, stick to something smaller so it doesn't clutter the entire page.
A note on security
It's important to remember that a text watermark is a visual signal, not a security lock. While it deters casual misuse, someone determined enough can still remove it with the right tools. If you need to strictly prevent editing or extraction, we recommend using this tool in combination with our Encrypt PDF tool for real cryptographic protection.
