What is Inflation?
Inflation is the gradual erosion of what your money can buy. Prices rise, and the same ₹100 that bought you a week's groceries years ago won't go nearly as far today. It's not dramatic on a year-to-year basis, but over a decade or two, the effect is significant. This calculator helps you put an actual number on that change.
How This Calculator Works
It uses historical Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for India to adjust money values across different years — not an assumed flat rate, but the actual inflation figures from each year.
- For historical periods — say, ₹1,000 in 2005 to 2023 — the calculator applies the actual year-over-year inflation rates between those two dates. You're getting a real answer, not a rough estimate.
- For future years beyond the available historical data, it switches to an assumed inflation rate that you can adjust yourself. You set the assumption; the calculator does the math.
- Purchasing power is the main output — you'll see exactly how much the buying power of your amount has shifted over the period you selected, including in cases of unusual deflation.
- The line chart traces the value of your initial amount year by year. Seeing it decline gradually over time is a different experience from just reading a final number — it makes the slow, steady effect of inflation genuinely visible.
Why Is This Useful?
When you're planning for retirement or setting a long-term savings goal, inflation isn't optional to think about. A corpus that looks comfortable today won't cover the same lifestyle 20 years from now if you haven't accounted for rising costs. This calculator makes that concrete — and once you see the numbers, it's hard to ignore them when making financial decisions.
